Former Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean Set to Deliver Keynote Address at Canada’s Supporting Women in Film Trades (SWIFT) Conference

FTM to announce internationally renowned filmmaker for Manitoba Film Master Series

WINNPEG, January 4, 2024 –  On Saturday, January 6, over one hundred women film professionals are set to attend Canada’s Supporting Women in Film Trades (SWIFT) Conference keynote address with former Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean.

The event organizer Film Training Manitoba is carrying out this ground-breaking initiative to increase the number of women and women-identifying individuals working in Manitoba’s film industry.

“I am eagerly looking forward to serving as the keynote speaker of Canada’s Supporting Women in Film Trades Conference. Encouraging and championing all the current and aspiring women film and media professionals is tremendously important to me.” Said Michaëlle Jean.

The keynote address was rescheduled from the original conference dates in November to January 6, 2024, from 2:00pm to 4:15pm.  Media are encouraged to attend the conference and Madame Jean will be available on site for media interviews at 4:15 pm until 6:00 pm. This one-of-its kind conference in Canada is held at RRC Polytechnic’s Manitou a bi Bii daziigae located at 319 Elgin Ave and Michaëlle Jean will be available for media inquiries at 4:15pm.

“Globally, there’s no other conference that exists that is targeted specifically for women workers within the film industry,” said the SWIFT Committee Vice-Chair board Ellen Rutter.

Film Training Manitoba’s SWIFT is part of a multifaceted training and recruitment strategy to have significantly more women entering and advancing in Manitoba’s film trades. According to Film Training Manitoba’s labour market information, as of October 2021, less than 30 per cent of Manitobans working in trades positions in the film industry are women and women-identifying individuals.

At the end of the SWIFT Conference, at 4:00 p.m. Film Training Manitoba will announce an internationally renowned filmmaker who will serve as the distinguished speaker of the upcoming Manitoba Film Master Series which is taking place on February 10 and 11, 2024.
