TAX CREDITS and BUDGETING for Low Budget Productions

October 29, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

with Colleen Alksnis

Saturday, October 29th | 10:00 am – 3:30 pm

Red River College – Princess Street Campus (160 Princess St.), Room P318

$75

Filmmaking is a true blend of business and creativity and making a film takes more than just picking up a camera and shooting a scene. More than anything they may encounter on set, one of the most baffling questions facing a filmmaker has more to do with raising funds and how to handle the ensuing tax credit application.

This one-day workshop with Colleen Alksnis will aim to answer as many of the questions you already have and the ones you haven’t even thought of yet.

Topics covered will include:

  • Overview and explanation of provincial (MFM) and federal (CAVCO) tax credits
  • Financial structure of the production
  • Bookkeeping practices for production accountants
  • Cost reports
  • Paperwork overview (release forms, deal memos, invoices, etc.)
  • Corporate filing

The Instructors

COLEEN ALKSNIS has been freelancing in the business affairs area of television for the last ten years beginning with 6 years on The Sharing Circle with Meeches Productions as producer, production manager, production accountant and production coordinator.

Local production companies such as Frantic Films, Buffalo Gal Pictures, Media Rendezvous, Rivard, Midcan, Eagle Vision and Animiki See have provided more experience for Colleen in the areas of production accounting, production managing, business affairs and tax credits. Colleen was also the business manager for APTN’s 2010 Winter Olympic Coverage.

Prior to working in this area of television, Colleen was employed at Videon Cable 11 for 13 years in all aspects of production from camerawork to editing to writing, directing and producing, and finally executive producing CityScape with Marcy Markusa.

For the past 10 years, Colleen has enjoyed meeting and working with numerous local independent producers; many of them producing shows for MTS. She maintains a goal of taking care of the paperwork so the producers can concentrate on creating the best shows possible.
