Manitoba’s workforce development and training organization for the film industry, Film Training Manitoba (FTM), and the Indigenous Filmmakers Association (IFA) have partnered to have master-level Hollywood-based screenwriter Carl Gottlieb instruct Manitoba screenwriters.
On February 24th from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm (CST) FTM and IFA will be conducting a 90-minute evening lecture that is available to all registered Manitobans (via Zoom) as well as a moderated Q & A for the participants with Gottlieb. The following day, Gottlieb with be providing a series of one-on-one coaching sessions for Manitoba members of the IFA.
“FTM’s goal is to provide world-class training for Manitoba’s dynamic film industry, and our work with the Indigenous Filmmakers Association has been a growing partnership, that has many accomplished members. We are very proud to partner with the IFA on this masterclass session.” Said FTM’s Managing Director Adam Smoluk.
Gottlieb is an actor, director, producer, screenwriter, and author. In addition to the Jaws screenplay, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and a British Academy Award, he co-wrote The Jerk, Jaws 2, Dr. Detroit, Jaws 3D, Which Way Is Up, and Caveman, which he also directed.

Gottlieb’s books include the bestseller Long Time Gone: The Autobiography of David Crosby (with David Crosby) and the acclaimed Jaws Log. He came to Hollywood from New York via San Francisco, where he was an improvisational actor with the famed satirical revue The Committee, and won an Emmy for writing The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on CBS.
For television, Gottlieb has written for The Odd Couple, All in the Family, and The Bob Newhart Show. He directed The Absent-Minded Waiter, a comedy short featuring Steve Martin that was nominated for an Academy Award. Gottlieb has taught advanced screenwriting at Columbia University, USC, the University of Miami & the American Film Institute.
In 2018, Gottlieb came to Winnipeg and instructed for FTM, working with a collection of Manitoba-based screenwriters including Canadian filmmaker Shawn Linden, whose film Hunter, Hunter was released in 2021 and was distributed by IFC Midnight. “I took Film Training Manitoba’s screenwriting writing session with Carl Gottlieb while I was sharpening up a feature script. Carl’s wealth of experience and insight was invaluable, and I would highly recommend this session to others.” Said Shawn Linden
