Course Outline: 

This course was developed by Hair and Makeup film industry veterans Pina Robinson (member of IATSE 856 & IATSE 891) and Alisha Talbot (member of IATSE 856). Both instructors bring their combined experience spanning over three decades of working in Manitoba’s dynamic film industry. 

This 2-day course is for hair and makeup technicians wanting to upgrade their skill-sets as well as more experienced crew who are wanting to understand the roles and responsibility of a Head of Department in the Hair and Makeup Departments.

Course Overview: 

Day 1 – Overview of all film paperwork and protocols that affect the hair and make-up departments and a review of the purpose and requirements of these materials. Both instructors will share useful industry standards on how to effectively communicate and work collaboratively. Day 1 will be useful for new industry personnel as well as more experienced crew who are wanting a refresher. 

Day 2 – Participants and instructors will dig deep into Script Breakdown and the varied levels of Continuity that affects the hair and make-up department during production. Instructors will provide in-depth training on how to best be prepared for potential challenges and requirements pertaining to continuity and breakdown. 

Topics of this course will include: 

  • Overview of department paperwork. 
  • Roles and Responsibilities. 
  • Fundamentals of Script breakdown. 
  • Practical in-class Script & Scene breakdown. 
  • Continuity best practices

About the instructors

Pina Robinson

Pina Robinson is a member of Winnipeg IATSE local 856 and Vancouver local 891 and has been in the film and television industry for over 30 years. Pina has experience in TV series, movies of the week, feature films and has worked around the world with a docudrama team. Pina has worked with many actors ranging from Keanu Reeves, Zooey Deschanel, Allison Janney and many more. 

Alisha Talbot

Alisha Talbot is a Manitoba based Makeup Artist with over 10 years’ experience working as a Makeup Artist for Film and TV. After attending Complexions International now known as CMU College of Art and Design, she worked in Toronto and Winnipeg. Alisha has built her career with IATSE 856 as a daily makeup artist to now being a Head of the Makeup Department working on such productions as The Chucky Franchise, The Syfy series Channel Zero and Alisha travelled to Korea as a Makeup Artist for CBC and Radio Canada for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
