Introduction to Self-Taping with Adam Hurtig

Training Session on May 7, 2020 – 7pm to 9pm (via ZOOM pro)

(in partnership with ACTRA & Film Training Manitoba)

During this distance education course, ACTRA Manitoba Member Adam Hurtig will be leading the participants through an in-depth learning session on self-taping. Joining Adam in this session is MB casting directors Jim Heber and Carmen Kotyk that will also be teaching industry standard techniques with self-taping to aid the participants’ learning.  The instructors will navigate answering questions and providing direct industry knowhow during this session.

Part I: The aim of this session is to support the performers to improve their skills and learn more about the important element of Self-Taping. 

Topics covered include:

  • Finding the right frame size.
  • Choosing a background that suits the tape and the ACTRA member’s look.
  • Clothing patterns, hats, dressing the part (but not), etc.
  • Lighting and sound.
  • Eyelines.
  • Importance of a reader.
  • Props: Do’s and Don’ts.

Part II: Next the instructor will move on to personal choices and preferences styles of filming. This section of this course is to aid in making self-taping session interesting for the potential viewer such as directors, producers and casting directors. 

The instructor will send out a sample audition piece for reference to the participants. 

Topics covered include:

  • What device to use.
  • Making some dynamic choices.
  • How much of the scene direction to follow.
  • Creating a believable space and atmosphere.
  • How important the first 10 seconds are.
  • Slate – when to slate, how to slate and where to put it.  

Part III: Mock Self-Taping

Participants will be asked to prepare an self-taped audition (sample script provided) and to be sent to instructor who will have a Manitoba Casting Director review and offer feedback.
