I am of Metis and British heritage with a background in medicine and physical fitness. Whether it is running ironman or riding equestrian, competition is in my blood, but acting and film production are in my DNA. I have acted in both feature and indie films, but the project close to my heart is a bio-pic that i co-produced and starred in that dealt with the painful trauma of addiction.
When and how did you start in the media production industry?
My start in this industry happened when a good friend suggested I do background work with her over 20 years ago. It was exhilarating: lights, camera, action! What intrigued me most wasn’t all the glamour and commotion, but the scrupulous precision that went into crafting a scene.
What area of the film industry do you work in now and why?
I don’t simply work as an actor, I LOVE being an actor! It allows you to be playful, raw, whimsically and mischievous, while at the same time compels you to be fully present, in the moment, and alive. AML piqued my enthusiasm to write and produce.
What has been a substantial change in the industry since you started?
The biggest change has been the explosion of social media and the innumerable media platforms that allow global access and unexpected appeal in foreign markets.
What is advice you would give to someone starting off in the media production industry? Why is learning and training important?
My best advice is to focus, do what you love and be generous about it. Be present and listen, and most of all, never give up.
What are some of the films, TV series or even books that have inspired you? How about anything new you’ve been into?
I favor the directors that elicit cathartic emotion, whether its David Fincher’s methodically controlled approach or Quentin Tarantino who blends Hitchcock’s masterful suspense with Sergio Leone’s extreme juxtaposition. In no particular order; Se 7en, Zodiac, Reservoir Dogs, The Hateful Eight. Or series: Burden of Truth, The Queens Gambit, The Flight Attendant. FTM offers courses that make big waves in our industry, allowing us to be plugged into the latest ideas and protocols that keep us fresh, relevant, and current.
Is there something about you or an interesting past experience that you’d like to share with your colleagues?
My film AML, A Mothers Love(2018) was made from my own experience living and looking for a drug addicted son. I felt it was important to make because of the rise in addictions and the hope that all families need. The children need to know they are loved and not alone or forgotten.
Is there someone within the film industry you would like to work with and why?
I would like to work with the team at eagle vision. Actors I would like to work with Rebecca Gibson, Tina Fey. Actor wise I would like to focus on expanding and working on roles here. Which is where the workshops offered by FTM are great tools to add to my tool kit.
Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?
In 10 years I see myself acting but also moving into writing and producing. My goal is to start this with my friend, we have been fleshing out a series and hope to start pitching by 2021.
