FTM and MITT launch online Learning Initiative

Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT), Film Training Manitoba (FTM), launch online learning initiative
Partnership provides tuition credit, creates access point into Manitoba’s film industry for MITT students, alumni, in trades allied with film

As students and educators across the province find creative new ways to sustain learning through online platforms during COVID-19, MITT and FTM are excited to launch the new ACTION! Program for 2020-21.

The web-based program offers 30 MITT students or alumni from three programs (Carpentry, Hairstyling, and Culinary Arts and Design) a free tuition credit of $100 toward FTM’s online Set Orientation course—a credential recognized by industry as well as a requirement for membership in many of its unions*—and opens participants up to a variety of new and exciting employment opportunities.

“Film Training Manitoba appreciates the efforts of MITT to fast track the ACTION! program for students and alumni interested in jobs and careers in Manitoba’s dynamic film industry,” says Adam Smoluk, Managing Director, Film Training Manitoba. “I also wish to thank Manitoba Film and Music’s CEO and Film Commissioner, Rachel Rusen Margolis, for her important involvement in this partnership.”

Students selected for the course gain an understanding of the filmmaking process, and familiarity with the various procedures that are vitally important for communication and scheduling on a day-to-day basis.

In addition, MITT and FTM will conduct a Careers in Film session, tentatively scheduled for Fall 2020 at MITT, where students will hear from industry experts and learn about the current and future state of film in Manitoba.

Details of the screening and selection process will be posted at MITT.ca.

“We’re excited about this partnership with Film Training Manitoba because of the unique skillset and competitive edge it can provide our students, and alumni, looking for careers in local film and television industries,” says Marnie Groeneveld, Director of the Centre for Career Development, Experiential and Lifelong Learning at MITT. “We are very grateful for this investment in our student’s professional development and appreciate the vision and creativity of Film Training Manitoba.”

* This course is required for membership in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE Local 856), Director’s Guild of Canada’s Manitoba District Council (DGC-MB) and International Cinematographers Guild of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) ICG 669.
