During one of the two days, each participant will receive an individual 45-minute, one-on-one session with producer Merit Jensen Carr. Participants should come prepared to discuss a project (or projects) that they are currently developing.

In advance of the session, participants are expected to research potential funding sources and be prepared to discuss this with the instructor in order to receive the most beneficial feedback on their projects.

Through these individual sessions participants will gain a deeper insight into the process of creating and planning productions.

NOTE: Upon registration, participants may optionally submit supporting materials (e.g. a project synopsis, budget forms, etc.) that would help Merit better prepare for the one-on-one meeting. Materials can be e-mailed to:


About the Instructor

MERIT JENSEN CARR is an award-winning producer, recipient of 2013 documentary’s Don Haig Award, and the lifetime achievement award at the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards 2014. Over the past 25 years, Merit has built her boutique company into a production powerhouse with a reputation for excellence. The result is a long
list of international award-winning programs including: the 65-part Recreating Eden; the transmedia series, One Ocean, co- produced with CBC’s The Nature of Things
and National Geographic International; and
 The Secret World of Shoplifting, which was the highest rated program in the history of the CBC DOC Zone strand.

Her feature films include multi-award winning and internationally distributed co-productions 40 Years of One Night Stands (2008 – co-produced with Inside Out Productions), TuTuMUCH (2010 – co-produced with Vonnie Von Helmot Film), and the locally self-distributed title Special Ed (2013).

Merit is Chair of DOC Manitoba and on the Board of Directors for DOC National, as well as Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for On Screen Manitoba. She is a past director on the board of the CFTPA and the Winnipeg Film Group.

Merit is currently in production on Polar Bear Alley for Outdoor Life Network and the Smithsonian Channel US, as well as three documentaries for CBC and two feature documentaries for TVO and Super Channel.



Film Training Manitoba Course Registration Policy

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older to register and attend the course.
  • Participants must register in advance of the course. No drop-ins.
  • Registration is on a first come, first served basis – unless otherwise specified. Enrollment may be limited.
  • Registration for all courses, including weekend workshops, must be done between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (except holidays).
  • All registrations must be received and confirmed in-person or by telephone with an FTM staff member during office hours. We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.
  • Payment in full is required to secure a spot in an FTM course.


Course Registration

Registration can be done in one of two ways:

In Person – cash, cheque, VISA and MasterCard, and debit are accepted. (Please make cheques payable to Film Training Manitoba.) Our offices are located at 100 – 62 Albert Street, in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. We are open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

By Phone – VISA and MasterCard only. Registrations are accepted via the main line at 204-989-9669. *We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.

Cancellation Policy 

  • Participants must cancel up to 4 full business days prior to the course start date to receive an 80% refund.
  • No refund will be given to participants who cancel within 4 full business days before the course start date, or if they do not attend the course.
  • Film Training Manitoba reserves the right to cancel, or postpone, any course where a minimum registration level has not been met. Participants registered for a course that is canceled will receive a full refund.
