Workshop Description

This three-day workshop (two full days plus an evening) is designed for those who have to deliver their best on stage – whether you are a singer, dancer, actor or speaker – or whether you are an amateur or a professional.

The Master Performing curriculum addresses the root causes of performance anxiety, effective artistic preparation and learning techniques, and techniques to manage onstage and on-camera anxiety.

Often, performers and practitioners think of performance anxiety in terms of what happens on stage; how to manage the shaking lips and the racing heart on Audition Day. The Master Performing approach digs further, solidifying confidence from the ground up, so that there are fewer stressful performing situations to begin with.

The  curriculum includes:

  • Understanding the psychological roots of performance anxiety. Self-esteem, confidence, motivation, dealing with success and failure, self-sabotage.
  • Artistic preparation. Quality and intensity of preparation, concentration, time management skills, understanding learning and memory as pertinent to learning your material. Goal-setting.
  • Focus, concentration, and consistency. Imagery techniques. Body language, conveying calmness and confidence to your audience.
  • Understanding and managing the physical manifestations of performance anxiety. Shaking, sweating, racing heart-rate, tight and shallow breathing, lack of focus, muscle tension and fatigue.

About the Instructor

LISA CHISHOLM combines a professional orchestral performing career with formal training in psychology, bringing a performer’s perspective to coaching performing artists on optimal artistic preparation, and prevention and management of stage fright.

With years of professional audition and performing experience plus a Certificate in Psychology from Ryerson University and studies in Counseling Skills from George Brown College in Toronto, Lisa brings a performing artist’s perspective to the practitioner’s side of the fence. Lisa teaches optimal preparation and mental skills to performing artists so that they can bring their best selves to the stage.

With orchestral performance training from McGill University (Licentiate Music Diploma, High Distinction in Bassoon) and The Juilliard School (Advanced Certificate and Professional Studies), Lisa has enjoyed a career with orchestras across Canada, the USA, and the UK. She performs regularly with the orchestra of the Canadian Ochisholm picpera Company and in upstate New York’s Glimmerglass Opera Company, and has played as guest principal bassoonist with London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

She has distinguished herself repeatedly in orchestral auditions with notable orchestras including the orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.
