About the workshop
As a visual researcher for the past 35 years in the documentary film and television industry, Elizabeth has

developed an extensive knowledge around research, rights clearance and copyright for music and film.

She has had the distinct pleasure to work with filmmakers such as Werner Herzog, Jennifer Baichwal,
Barry Avrich and Sarah Polley. She has won 5 Canadian Screen Awards for her work on various projects.

Elizabeth has been giving workshops at colleges, universities, and film festivals throughout Canada,
the United States and Europe for the last 15 years.

Areas of Discussion include: 
Navigate the world of documentary research and clearances. Learn the latest on how to obtain,
reduce costs and limit risks using stock footage, stills, and licensed music.

  • The current rights marketplace
  • How to find the best sources of visual material (photographs, archival film, graphics, and maps),
  • Negotiating terms and rates
  • Inexpensive alternatives to expensive archival footage
  • How to document “due diligence” or best efforts

During her 3 hour workshop, Elizabeth will provide multiple examples based on previous projects she has worked on and will use a combination of video and audio examples.

 

About the Instructor
Elizabeth has worked as a producer, editorial and visual researcher, and clearance specialist on numerous award-winning international documentary films and interactive projects that have garnered Emmy, Gemini, CSA, Peabody and Oscar awards.

A graduate of Queen’s University, she has taught documentary research and development at Ryerson University in Toronto and has led research and rights clearance workshops at numerous international conferences. and broadcasters. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has worked for HBO, PBS, the National Film Board of Canada, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, Discovery, History Television, CTV, Channel 4, Arte, ZDF, among other international broadcasters and independent production companies.

Nominated for an Emmy in the Craft of Research and three times for Best Visual Researcher at the FOCAL Awards in the UK, Elizabeth has won the 2017, 2015, and 2014 and 2013 Canadian Screen Award, the 2015 Gemeaux Award, and the 2010 Gemini for Best Visual Research.  She has won the Yorkton Golden Sheaf award, and was honored with the  FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.  Elizabeth has served on the board of WIFT Toronto, Impact Media Summit, and was the founding chairperson for ten years for the Visual Researchers’ Society of Canada. She is on International Executive Committee for FOCAL International in the UK and is a member of DOC Toronto and WIFT.

Film Training Manitoba Course Registration Policy\

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older to register and attend the course.
  • Participants must register in advance of the course. No drop-ins.
  • Registration is on a first come, first served basis – unless otherwise specified. Enrollment may be limited.
  • Registration for all courses, including weekend workshops, must be done between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (except holidays).
  • All registrations must be received and confirmed in-person or by telephone with an FTM staff member during office hours.
  • We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.
  • Payment in full is required to secure a spot in an FTM course.

 

Course Registration

Registration can be done in one of two ways:

 

In Person– Cash, VISA and MasterCard, and debit are accepted. Our offices are located at 100 – 62 Albert Street, in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. We are open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

 

By Phone– VISA and MasterCard only. Registrations are accepted via the main line at 204-989-9669. *We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.

 

Cancellation Policy

  • Participants must cancel up to 4 full business days prior to the course start date to receive an 80% refund.
  • No refund will be given to participants who cancel within 4 full business days before the course start date, or if they do not attend the course.
  • Film Training Manitoba reserves the right to cancel, or postpone, any course where a minimum registration level has not been met. Participants registered for a course that is canceled will receive a full refund.
