Introduction to Accounting for Film with Phil Doerksen

Workshop participants will learn about the duties and responsibilities of an accounting assistant in the film industry, and how their role within the accounting office benefits a production. This course will combine theory with the expectations of the accounting department; and how as part of the team, the accounting assistant participates in achieving the department’s objectives.
Accounting is a high-priority occupation in the local film industry with a very good chance of employment.
Participants will gain a comprehensive overview of the methods and procedures used in the accounting department, across various production genres, for both television and/or feature films. The course will explore the numerous processes and timely occurrences within the life cycle of a production, from pre-production to post-production periods. There will be practical exercises such as coding purchase orders (PO’s) and matching PO’s to invoices, auditing petty cash and filing.
What is a production accounting assistant?
Also known as a production accounting clerk, he or she supports each member of the accounting team with clerical tasks, such as filing, copying, scanning, and data entry. The department processes large volumes of important and confidential paperwork; therefore the assistant’s role is vital in keeping this paperwork organized and circulating. An accounting assistant should be able to multi-task; work well under pressure; be detail-oriented and organized; and have proficiency in math and preparation of spreadsheets.
Who should take this course?
- New entrants or existing crew who are interested in working as an accounting assistant.
- Entry level accounting students, with little or no previous background or knowledge in accounting procedures and production; intending to familiarize themselves with the production process.
- Production personnel from other departments or disciplines who want to work in the accounting department.
- Accountants and/or bookkeepers from other disciplines and businesses wanting to acquire specific knowledge about production accounting operation and make the transition to work within the film and television industry.
NOTE: A confidentiality agreement will need to be signed on the day of the workshop for materials distributed during the workshop.
What to bring:
A laptop computer, an assortment of pens, and a calculator.
About the Instructor
PHIL DOERKSEN has been an independent accounting consultant since 1999, working primarily in the film industry, but also with manufacturing, documentary and abattoir businesses. His personal motto is that he puts logical business order into your creative business. Phil has worked as a production accountant on feature films such as The Tamed Ones, Faces in the Crowd, Hungry Hills, Stephen King’s Dolan Cadillac, Surveillance and Wrong Turn 4.
As well as working on the television series Little Mosque on the Prairie – seasons 1 and 2 (Saskatchewan portion) and InSecurity, Phil has been a producer and co-producer on various features and MOW’s. Phil is dedicated to ongoing professional development and has taken the following courses through the Directors Guild of Canada; Designing the Schedule, Production Accounting Workshop, and Post Production Course. Phil completed his Business Administration certificate from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003 and attended the Executive Management Intensive Training Program offered by Banff Executive leadership Inc. in 2005. Phil is currently the Production Accountant for the upcoming television series Sunnyside.
Film Training Manitoba Course Registration Policy
- Participants must be 18 years of age or older to register and attend the course.
- Participants must register in advance of the course. No drop-ins.
- Registration is on a first come, first served basis – unless otherwise specified. Enrollment may be limited.
- Registration for all courses, including weekend workshops, must be done between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (except holidays).
- All registrations must be received and confirmed in-person or by telephone with an FTM staff member during office hours. We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.
- Payment in full is required to secure a spot in an FTM course.
Registration can be done in one of two ways:
In Person – cash, cheque, VISA and MasterCard, and debit are accepted. (Please make cheques payable to Film Training Manitoba.) Our offices are located at 100 – 62 Albert Street, in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. We are open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
By Phone – VISA and MasterCard only. Registrations are accepted via the main line at 204-989-9669. *We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.
- Participants must cancel up to 4 full business days prior to the course start date to receive an 80% refund.
- No refund will be given to participants who cancel within 4 full business days before the course start date, or if they do not attend the course.
- Film Training Manitoba reserves the right to cancel, or postpone, any course where a minimum registration level has not been met. Participants registered for a course that is canceled will receive a full refund.
