Workshop Description

Over the first day, participants will be introduced to the 5 key elements that actors need to know in order to learn any accent or dialect: Oral Posture, Placement, Intonation, Vowel and Consonant Changes. Participants will develop their understanding and awareness of speech sounds and develop their ear and tactile sensation to both hear and make subtle variations in these sounds. Using the key elements, participants will be taught a step-by-step process to work on and acquire a dialect. On the second day, these skills will be applied to learning 2 dialects: General American (sometimes called “Standard American”) and Standard British. Participants will receive some initial feedback and coaching on word or sentence drills and on a short selection of text.

Participants will receive dialect breakdowns (audio and written) for both of these dialects. Other dialect resources will be shared such as a list of where to find authentic samples, a list of quality dialect instruction at local libraries and others. After the completion of the first weekend, participants will be asked to spend some time working on the dialect(s) on a story or monologue. Participants will then return in the final weekend for a private and more focused (half-hour, one-on-one) coaching session.

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • produce General American and Standard British speech more accurately.
  • more easily find credible and authentic dialect or accent sources from which to work.
  • more accurately determine and apply the oral posture, placement and musicality (or intonation) of a dialect or accent.
  • more accurately reproduce specific sound changes for a dialect or accent.
  • work on a step-by-step approach for dialect acquisition.
  • more accurately assess their skill with a given dialect or accent.
