Introduction to Documentary Cinematography with Charles Konowal CSC

About the workshop

A cinematographers role is to interpret the story and use techniquesto maintain a certainperspective,mood and visual style. Another important role of the cinematographer is to work in collaboration
with the director to realize their vision of the film the look and the storytelling approach are part of the cinematographer’s responsibilities.

 

This one-day workshop will cover topics including:

  • The role of the documentary cinematographer
  • Composition and framing
  • Camera movement
  • Lighting
  • Covering a balance between technical expertise and artistic expression
  • Q & A session

 

Charles will go in-depth about these and other subjects, as well as discussing the hands on tools of the trade.

 

About the Instructor

Charles Konowal is a cinematographer with years of experience in both drama and documentary production. His career as a cinematographer started in the mid 70’s with documentary which was part of a PBS anthology series. During the 80’s and the 90’s he worked with the NFB on numerous award-winning productions. During that time he also had the opportunity to also produce and direct several films including The Defender andthe NFB Prairie Studio’s first feature documentary Fat Chance,which went on to win a Peabody Award.

In 2013 Charles produced and photographed Arctic Defendersthe award winning feature documentary with John Walker Productions, which tells the remarkable story that began in 1968 with a radical Inuit movement that would change the political landscape in Canada forever. It led to the largest land claim in western civilization, orchestrated by young visionary Inuit with a dream – the governance of their territory – the creation of Nunavut.

As a director and cinematographer Charles has recently completed This is a Riot, Happily Dysfunctional,Chasing a Song, and Visiting Day.

Film Training Manitoba Course Registration Policy  

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older to register and attend the course.
  • Participants must register in advance of the course. No drop-ins.
  • Registration is on a first come, first served basis – unless otherwise specified. Enrollment may be limited.
  • Registration for all courses, including weekend workshops, must be done between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (except holidays).
  • All registrations must be received and confirmed in-person or by telephone with an FTM staff member during office hours.
  • We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.
  • Payment in full is required to secure a spot in an FTM course.

 

Course Registration

Registration can be done in one of two ways:

In Person– Cash, VISA and MasterCard, and debit are accepted. Our offices are located at 100 – 62 Albert Street, in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. We are open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

By Phone– VISA and MasterCard only. Registrations are accepted via the main line at 204-989-9669. *We do not confirm or accept registrations via email.

Cancellation Policy

  • Participants must cancel up to 4 full business days prior to the course start date to receive an 80% refund.
  • No refund will be given to participants who cancel within 4 full business days before the course start date, or if they do not attend the course.
  • Film Training Manitoba reserves the right to cancel, or postpone, any course where a minimum registration level has not been met. Participants registered for a course that is canceled will receive a full refund
